Sorting out our waste
Edmonton was one of the first cities in North America to have a curbside recycling program.
Since then, a number of innovative ideas and projects have been put into action, leading the city to become known for its waste management system.
“It’s always been a focus on diverting (waste) for sustainability,” said Jodi Tauber, waste management communications officer.
Current practices see 60 per cent of Edmonton’s waste diverted from landfill and once a new biofuels facility opens up in 2015, that number could grow to 90 per cent.
Such things have been noticed by environmentalist David Suzuki.
He and his Nature of Things television crew paid a visit last September for a tour of the Edmonton Waste Management Centre with staff and Coun. Don Iveson.
The footage will be part of The Suzuki Diaries: Future City, airing Thursday at 8 p.m. on CBC.
The show features Suzuki and his daughter, Sarika, exploring how Canada’s major cities deal with environmental issues.
